Ph.D.,
M.P.H, Director of Surgical Research at the MFA, Research
Professor of Surgery at GWU
Dr. Carter received her Masters and Ph.D. in Human Genetics
from the University of Hawaii in 1975 and 1979. She received
an additional Masters in Public Health, Epidemiology in 1981.
She has worked in government research (National Heart, Lung
and Blood Institute, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes
of Health), in government contracting (Westat, Inc, The Emmes
Corp) and in private industry (OncorMed, Inc., Celera Genomics).
Dr. Carter has over 24 years of experience in research design/methodology,
clinical studies development and human subject protections;
and she has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications. Dr.
Carter became Director of Surgical Research at the Medical
Faculty Associates of the George Washington University (GWU)
and has been appointed Research Professor of Surgery at GWU.
She is responsible for the development of a productive research
program involving surgery which includes initiating, implementing,
and managing all sponsored and un-sponsored research studies.
In addition, Dr. Carter teaches medical students and surgical
residents, and directs and supervises their research interests.
Today's talk will outline and briefly discuss her research
activities in the Department of Surgery and her varied activities
at GWU Medical Center. She also directs and instructs medical
students and surgical residents on the "Fundamentals
of Research Methodology". Dr. Carter hopes to facilitate
interest in a variety of interdisciplinary activities, to
include: surgery, genomics, public health and medicine.
