Director, Division of Solid and Fluid Mechanics, Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories, FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health
Dr. Grossman serves as the division director for the Division of Solid and Fluid Mechanics within the Office of Science and Technology of the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health. This group consists of twenty professional staff of diverse backgrounds. The Division performs research, laboratory analysis, and review on a broad range of medical device topics for which structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and/or ultrasonics are core issues. Medical systems that have been studied by the branch include stents, orthopedic implants, heart valves, hemodialysis systems, condoms, viral barriers, cerebral spinal fluid shunts, and diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound systems.
Dr. Grossman earned the degree of Ph.D. in Atomic Physics from the University of Kentucky in 1977. His dissertation research topic was in Laser Ionization Spectroscopy. He joined FDA in 1970, and apart from two years at Oak Ridge to finish his Ph.D. dissertation, he has worked his entire career within the Agency as a Medical Physicist. During that time period he has been active in applied research and regulatory work in nuclear medicine, optics, MR imaging and fluid mechanics.
