Professor, Orthopaedic
Surgery, Director of Clinical Informatics, Director of the
Surgical Skills Center
Dr. Michelsonjoined the GW School of Medicine Orthopaedic
Surgery faculty in 2002, after having spent 13 years at Johns
Hopkins and two years at the University of Vermont. While
at Hopkins, he developed a productive research program devoted
to the investigation of the biomechanics of the ankle, with
extensive basic science and clinical components. His current
interests include the development of a physiologically realistic
computer model for the ankle joint that can be used for further
studies about ankle injuries. While at Hopkins, he was also
recruited into an effort to develop an Electronic Patient
Record (EPR) for the medical center. Having seen the positive
benefits that rapidly accrued to the successful development
of the EPR at Hopkins, and building on his undergraduate education
in Engineering, he has gradually increased his involvement
in assessment and design of Electronic Medical Record systems
at Johns Hopkins, The University of Vermont, and now at George
Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
At GWU, this role has also expanded to include the more general
issues of the use of technology in education. It is in this
context that he has become the Director of the Surgical Skills
Center, where he facilitates the development of simulation
in medical education.
